How America Supports People of Color

Thanks to the coalition of individuals who put pressure on the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to release these videos, we now know that the systematic policing of Black Americans is far more widespread and insidious than we have been taught to believe.

If you have been paying attention to the coverage from outlets ranging from the New York Times to MSNBC to The Intercept, you would have been able to confirm this by now. In fact, you would have probably said it yourself — these videos show the systematic oppression of an entire race of people. They are a call to action to everyone who believes that systemic racism exists in America. And I agree with them

But we also have to remember that these videos, though they show outright abuses by the NYPD, are just one piece of a much larger story in the Black community. We all know how heavily policed Black communities in America have become, how the police have systematically militarized, and how the recent murder of George Floyd has only highlighted the injustices that have plagued the community for far too long

To me, the most powerful part of these videos is when they were shown on C-Span and in the news. The most powerful part — when the police officers realized that they weren’t going to get away with this, and started attempting to return the kindness that they had denied the first time.
